Portsmouth Civic Centre

A contract to update the plant room at Portsmouth Civic Centre has included the installation of both low temperature and medium temperature plate heat exchangers from the Econoplate range manufactured by Stokvis Energy Systems.

Working for Portsmouth City Council, Corrigenda was the specialist contractor which installed all of the Stokvis equipment in the building that provides office space for some 2,000 staff. The high performance plate heat exchangers are being fed from new medium temperature boilers.

The contracts manager for Corrigenda, Mr Matt King, commented: “As a company which works across Surrey, Hampshire and a lot of the south of England, we have used Stokvis equipment many times: knowing them as a reputable supplier. This particular job came about as the result of the long-term maintenance contract we have for schools across Hampshire and we called in Stokvis’ technical sales manager to help us assess the existing set up.”

“The problem was we couldn’t get any information on the old plate heat exchangers, but he measured up the plates and calculated the output. The work started with the new plates being installed in a separate area of the lower ground floor plant room which also featured a “Summer Boiler”. Stokvis provided a medium temperature to low temperature plate which we fed off the main heating boilers, into a low loss header. We then had a weekend for the switchover and now the client can use the LTHW or MTHW plates depending on the time of year or the time of day.”

“The Econoplates are providing a high-efficiency hot water service for all the toilets and the coffee shop, including numerous sinks around the building.”

Stokvis Econoplate plate heat exchangers are widely used for the supply of hot water in high demand situations, including hotels, conference centres, student accommodation and leisure centres, as well as industrial process applications. They are also specified to avoid the storage of hot water which can lead to an increased risk of Legionella contamination.
