After careful consideration and a tender process Stokvis Energy Systems Econoplate “H” Series Heat Interface Units were utilised as part of a new communal heating system within Windsor Great Park.
The project has been carried out under the supervision of Andrew Dunning, Chief Surveyor on the Windsor Estate, with Lorien Engineering Solutions being the consultant responsible for the main design work. Meanwhile Sykes and Son Ltd was the M&E contractor responsible for all the installation work.
Some 70 Stokvis H-Series HIUs have been installed into cottages and other buildings around the estate: linking them into an advanced central biomass plant and pump station installed to provide district heating around parts of the Great Park. The “H series” heat interface units have been installed to replace the old-fashioned back boilers in each of the cottages and associated buildings. Stokvis Energy Systems UK Sales Director, Keith Howard, advised on the sizing and the customisation of units in conjunction with the consultant, Lorien Engineering.
The design concept is based on the 80°C district heating mains from the biomass boiler installation, feeding the primary side of the Stokvis HIU’s, after which the secondary side of each interface unit feeds a cottage with either heating or hot water by means of “Y-plan” system. This is achieved by the controls within each property/HIU switching between heating or domestic hot water dependent on requirements/usage.
The HIUs also incorporate wireless heat meters that can be interrogated remotely to enable billing information to be generated. Lorien Consultants and the Estate also requested that small windows be provided within each of the HIUs casing so that residents can see how much energy they have used by viewing the heat meter display. The flexibility of the Stokvis production enabled this to be provided.
The Project Manager for Sykes and Son, Mr John Edwards, commented: “Following the specification of the H-Series HIUs by Lorien we received very good assistance from Stokvis Energy Systems, whilst the company also responded very quickly when we needed to order some extra units or have changes made to the design. I would have no hesitation in going to Stokvis again in the future.”
The H-Series HIUs can be used on any type of communal or district heating system, which are becoming increasingly popular for tenanted properties as they avoid the need for annual gas safety inspections.
